BW Flexible Systems is the flexible-packaging division of Barry-Wehmiller’s BW Packaging platform, formed in January 2018. It manufactures vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) baggers and horizontal flow-wrapping machines under the Hayssen brand, alongside Symach and Thiele equipment for palletizing and bag filling.

The Hayssen brand: VFFS and flow wrapping

Hayssen began in 1910 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, when founder Herman Hayssen patented the first automatic bread-wrapping machine; Barry-Wehmiller acquired the brand in May 1997. Today the Hayssen line is built in Duncan, South Carolina, with facilities in Italy and the UK.

Vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) machines

  • Ultima — intermittent-motion VFFS, up to 100 bags/min.
  • Ultima SVJ — servo-driven jaws, up to 120 bags/min.
  • ISB (Intelligent Sanitary Bagger) — IP66 washdown with USDA Dairy and Meat & Poultry acceptance, up to 150 bags/min, for wet and hygienic applications.
  • Verus — continuous- or intermittent-motion, up to 110 bags/min.
  • Mini — compact VFFS with in-line digital printing, up to 90 bags/min.

Horizontal flow-wrapping (HFFS) machines

  • R300 — hand-fed flow wrapper for bakery, up to 150 packs/min.
  • X850 — multi-jaw flow wrapper up to 300 packs/min for cheese, IP66 washdown.
  • Minerva — rotary flow wrapper, mechanical speed up to 500 packs/min.
  • Integra — long-dwell sealing, MAP-capable, up to 150 packs/min.

Applications and customers

Markets span food, pet food, medical, pharmaceutical, industrial and consumer goods. Named users include The Killer Brownie Company (R300), Crest Foods (Ultima control upgrade) and Cranswick Gourmet Pastry (Merlin HSE flow wrappers).
