What these machines cost
Labeling and coding span a wide price band — a standalone coding printer sits in the low thousands, while a high-speed roll-fed or combined labeler runs well into the six figures. Vendors do not publish price lists, so treat these as order-of-magnitude bands and always quote the label/code format, change parts, validation and service contract in the same scope.
5 questions to ask before you buy
- What is the measured labels or codes per minute on my container, not the brochure figure? Output depends on the label format and container; ask for the demonstrated rate on your exact pack.
- Can you run my containers and labels through a full run and show me the placement or code quality data? A witnessed run on your product is the only proof that matters.
- How long is a full format or label change, demonstrated by my operators? Time a real changeover — an estimate is not a demonstration.
- What are the change-part, printhead and consumable costs for every format? Coders and labelers carry consumables (ink, ribbons, printheads); lock the running cost in writing.
- Which compliance does the coding system meet (serialization, GMP, 21 CFR Part 11)? For regulated fills, confirm the software and audit-trail compliance, not just the print quality.
